Today Steinway & Sons have to factories, one in Hamburg, Germany and one in New York, USA.

 

 

 

Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, from germany, built his first piano in 1836.

later in 1851 he moved to america and changed his name from steinweg to steinway. 

in 1853 Steinway and his Sons founded the company Steinway & Sons and in the 1860`s the were the main leading Piano company in America.

Many of Steinway`s methods when it comes to the making of the piano`s has been copied by other piano companys and is now a standard all over the world.

 

During the 1920`s Steinway & Sons sold over 6000 instruments a year.

During the second world war the factory in New York had to produce parts to the american army and the factory in germany was confiscated by the nazis since it was american owned.

During the bombing in Hamburg, the factory was hit and almost destroyed.

 

Because of financial problems steinway and sons was sold to CBS in 1972 and then sold to Steinway Musical Properties. inc. which again sold it to Selmer in 1995.

Today only one member off the Steinway family works at Steinway.

 

As of today many people recon the Steinway piano as the worlds best piano in the world.
